He Gives More Grace

playing hymns

Even while in nursing care, Mom played the piano for as long as she was able.

by Karen Roberts

One of my mother’s favorite songs was “He Giveth More Grace.”  She loved to sit at the piano and play hymns, and that song was one that she frequently played.  When I was young and carefree, I didn’t really think about what the words meant.  But Mom recently passed away, and on the list of her favorite hymns was this song”

He Giveth More Grace
by Annie J. Flint

  1. He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater,
    He sendeth more strength as our labors increase;
    To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
    To multiplied trials He multiplies peace.
  2. When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
    When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
    When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
    Our Father’s full giving is only begun.
  3. Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
    Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
    Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
    The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.
  4. His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
    His power no boundary known unto men;
    For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
    He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

In reading these words, I can see why this was one of Mom’s favorites.  The words are so true!  Just in looking back over the last few years of my life, I can see how God has given me more grace over and over again.

Here are some of the trials that I’ve been through.

I lost a job that I loved in Christian camp ministry.  But God gave more grace and opened the door to getting a job close to where my elderly parents lived.  Once I moved there I discovered that they needed my help much more than I had known.

Twice my husband got sick and weak, and doctors did not know what was wrong.  But God gave more grace and had someone tell us about a homeopathic practitioner who was able to pinpoint his illness and give supplements that aided a quick recovery.

Shortly after moving to this area, my father became critically ill, and after two surgeries, passed away.  God gave His grace and helped my mother, our family, and I rejoice in his home-going, for he was a follower of Jesus.  In those times of missing him, we were often reminded that our separation is only for a little while.

When my husband was in an auto accident and later a motorcycle accident, the Lord gave me His grace to help him with his personal care needs, keep going to work each day, and to visit Mom frequently.  Often I felt exhausted, physically and emotionally, but by turning to the Lord to be my Strength, I received His grace each day to keep on keeping on.

Within less than three years Mom suffered through a back surgery, a knee replacement, a hip replacement, a broken elbow, and surgery on a broken ankle.  In addition she had much pain from rheumatoid arthritis which was misdiagnosed for several years, and therefore not treated correctly.  Throughout those years of suffering, she had to keep turning to our Savior to draw upon His grace. In trying to encourage her through that time I also received God’s grace over and over.

Her final battle was with short, as cancer took over her body.  As I sat in the hospital with her for two weeks, watching her weaken, not able to eat, and losing her ability to communicate.  Through God’s grace, she did not suffer pain and slept most of the time.  I was given God’s peace and reassurance that He was preparing to bring her into His eternal presence.  On September 27th, my dad’s birthday, Mom experienced God’s wonderful grace as she transitioned from her earthly body to enjoy His presence in Heaven.

During this time of grieving, I continue to see God giving me His grace over and over again.  I have peace and joy in the midst of missing my parents.

If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ, God’s grace is there for you too!

Listen to this beautiful piano rendition of her favorite song and meditate on how much grace God is extending to you.
